As you probably know, when Darwin was 22 years old, he left home and sailed around the world on a cramped, wooden ship called the HMS Beagle.

Scientists of his day had already noticed that traits could change over time in populations of animals and plants. In other words, populations of organisms evolve.

Darwin's journey helped him discover how evolution happens - by the process of natural selection.
