'Signal Transduction' or 'Signaling'
is the process by which biological information is transferred.
Signaling happens at multiple levels, from interactions
between species in ecological systems to interactions
between molecules inside a cell.
In this lesson, we will look at signal transduction
in animals at the organismal and the cellular levels.
In the whole animal, signal transduction controls growth,
development, metabolism and behavior. In individual
cells, signal transduction is crucial for decisions
about essential processes such as cell division and
metabolic control. In fact, many diseases are caused
by the malfunction of cellular signaling processes. |
